Welcome to Notes on Pain

One in four American adults lives with chronic pain. Here’s what I’m going to do about the research gap.

Hi, I’m Stephani Sutherland, PhD.

I’m a neuroscientist and a freelance science journalist, and I want to talk to you about pain. Chronic pain.

Did you know that one in four Americans is living with chronic pain?

And most of those people probably don’t even realize that pain research is going on. But it is, in labs across the U.S. and around the world.

And that’s what we’re going to talk about here at Notes on Pain.

I spent years as a journalist. My work appeared in Scientific American magazine, New Scientist, Knowable, and other places.

And then I was really honored to have a job at the National Institutes of Health, in the Office of Pain Policy and Planning.

And unfortunately, that office and my job were eliminated in April of 2025.

So I found myself back in the position of freelance journalist again. And I asked myself, and I asked a lot of people. I asked you. I asked people living with pain, and researchers, and healthcare workers: What would you like to see to get the latest information about pain research?

And that’s what I’m going to bring you at Notes on Pain: a weekly free newsletter, and a podcast coming soon.

Everything will be evidence-backed and fact-checked. I’m not selling anything here.

And the other important part about Notes on Pain is that you’ll hear the stories and the viewpoints from people living with pain.

So please join me here on Substack, and watch for our podcast coming soon.

Welcome to Notes on Pain.
